Christians Cover their Hair too, mashallah

Just found great stuff regarding Christians who cover their hair and believe in modest dress. Mashallah!

I didn't realize that this movement goes beyound the Amish/Mennonite communities.

I have a lot of anxiety about returning to the States to live. Thoughts like, "what will I wear?"..."I will be singled out as a terrorist if I wear hijab.." "How will I make any friends, (especially since it looks like we're going to live in Ohio)?"... "Everyone will think I'm a FREAK!!!".

The truth is, I love wearing hijab. Now, this includes the headscarf as well as modest clothing, ie clothes that don't reveal your figure. I love wearing the arabic "jelabiyya", a non-form-fitting dress, kinda like what nuns used to wear back when they all wore habits.

Ok, so wearing a jelabiyya would be fine. Wearing "shalwar kameez", the indian national dress which is basically just a long shirt with pants, is fine. But as soon as you cover your hair everyone suddenly is terrified of you. Heck, I could be standing on the beach in a bikini, but if I am wearing a headscarf suddenly there's a problem!

Hmm I guess you could just use a kerchief like the ones in the link you posted, and hopefully there won't be any problems.

Yeah, that's what I'm thinking. I want to blend in, and if I have to look like a conservative christian no prob-no need to martyr myself!

You know, Detroit has one of the largest Arab communities (Dearborn, actually) outside of the Middle East. Not that people in Detroit are particularly, uh, tolerant, but where in Ohio will you be? If you're near the Toledo area, you might be surprised how much support you get.

Then again, this is the United States we're talking about. People like talking big about acceptance and equality but there are so many tolerant and accepting places around the world. Sometimes, I'm ashamed to live here.

Good luck! And welcome back!

Gosh...meant to say, "there are so many other more tolerant communities..."

Blah blah...brain dead today.

That said, I would give everything to keep my rights as an American. There's too much good stuff that it outshines a lot of the crappy stuff.

Again, good luck.

Thanks y'all...yeah, didn't realize how much I loved the good ole USof A until I left it.

Living in the third world can really open your eyes to the "greatness" of America...in spite of it's weaknesses.

Will I stop protesting my government's injustices? No way!!!!

Will I stop writing political songs and performing them? No way!

...now I have even more of a reason to be inspired, because I love my country and I can't stand to see the buffooons trying to run it!

As someone who doesn't wear a headcovering, in a culture that doesn't wear head-coverings, I'm wondering how being conspicuous by doing so constitutes modesty? I hope the question doesn't offend you. Actually, I was doing some research on Mennonite/Amish headcoverings recently (b/c of a question on my blog), and on one site there was a discussion about precisely that, whether or not an article of clothing that brings attention to the wearer rather than otherwise actually promotes modesty.

GREAT POINT, Madcap, it's one that convinced me NOT to cover when I lived in the States before, and I very well may not again for that exact reason!

True story My wife and i were in a store waiting in line when a small christian child started staring at my wife and then announced rather loudly to her mother, "look mommy, she is dressed like Mary" out of the mouths of babes.

I think the hijab is wonderful, i wear it and am not muslim. I am a Christian too, that believes in modest dress. All my friends like me for me, not my body or the way i dress. matter of fact they love the fact i am different from all the other girls. They say i have spirit and class and am very dignified as a young lady. A lot of people love it. Only people who are ignorant and arrogant would think yo are a freak...are those the friends you want?

Were the hijab...to thine own self be true...and don't forget God/Allah. It only really matters what he thinks....not others and thier worldy views.

Besides, you got a lot more support than you think. you'll e fine, and I promise people will love you for you....no matter what you wear.

I just wanted to address the question regarding how a head-covering can constitute modesty if it makes you stand out. The head-covering hasn't anything to do with modesty. The dresses/non-form fitting clothes do. The head covering is a sign of the headship order God created - God above Christ, Christ above man, man above woman. The attention it draws to you is usually diverted above to God/Allah since most people assume it is a "religious thing". I am a Christian who covers. The blessings are worth it!
